Adjectives

Great Lesson Idea
The teachers uses unusual fruits to explore a number of adjectives. She sorts the learners into groups and places a bowl of fruit amongst them. each group had a different fruit. They are asked to describe the fruit by feeling and tasting it. She then gives them a worksheet where they have to choose the adjective which best describes the fruit.

Waffles gives me sniffles

Great Lesson Idea
The teacher used the poem -" Waffles gives me sniffles" to teach shared reading and writing. This lesson takes place over five days. Day One - Introduce the poem and discuss the poet and the title. The teacher pretends that the author asked the children to write a new stanza. Day Two - discuss Stanza's and what they are. The teacher and learners decide on what must be in the new stanza. The teacher and the children replace and add certain sections in the poem. Day Three - discuss the rhymimg words and put all the idea's together. Day four - discuss meaning of words and put together all the thoughts of the children. Day five - Act out the poem and illustrate it.

Language structures - comma

Great Lesson Idea
The teacher uses a puppets to introduce this concept. She tells the learners that Winnie the Pooh had a problem going shopping because the shop keeper did not understand him. His list of items where are too long and he said it far too quickly without stopping. The learners were then asked to punctuate Winnie's list by putting in the comma's. To conclude the lesson the teacher gave each group of learners a bag of items. This bag symbolised a shopping list. They had to create a sentence listing all the items they had by using the comma in the correct place.

The Adult Elephant Park

Great Lesson Idea
The teacher uses the DBE books in this lesson. He reads a story called ' The adult elephant park " on page 86. He discusses the title of the story as well as comprehension skills. When the learners complete the story and have answered all the questions they are asked to act out the story. As an application activity they have to write a dairy entry about their experience.

Beginning, middle and end

Great Lesson Idea
The teacher introduces a series of pictures to the learners. She discusses that all stories should have a beginning, middle and an end. This lesson takes place over a week. Day one - The learners discuss the pictures. Day Two - Discuss the beginning of the story. Day Three - Discuss the middle of the story. Day four - Discuss the end of the story. Day five - the children will look at different parts of the story and a title is given. As an application the children will write and illustrate the story.
