Phonics - "ng" sound

Great Lesson Idea
The teacher introduces the lesson by singing a song which has lots of sounds in them. She asks the learners to identify the sounds. She then shows them what her sound looks like. She explains that a n+g makes ng. She asks the learners to find words in the classroom which has that sound. She uses the strategy of matching words and pictures. As her conclusion she hides objects outside in the playground with the ng sound and asks a small group of learners to find and identify them.

The Adult Elephant Park

Great Lesson Idea
The teacher uses the DBE books in this lesson. He reads a story called ' The adult elephant park " on page 86. He discusses the title of the story as well as comprehension skills. When the learners complete the story and have answered all the questions they are asked to act out the story. As an application activity they have to write a dairy entry about their experience.

Beginning, middle and end

Great Lesson Idea
The teacher introduces a series of pictures to the learners. She discusses that all stories should have a beginning, middle and an end. This lesson takes place over a week. Day one - The learners discuss the pictures. Day Two - Discuss the beginning of the story. Day Three - Discuss the middle of the story. Day four - Discuss the end of the story. Day five - the children will look at different parts of the story and a title is given. As an application the children will write and illustrate the story.

"Waffles gives me sniffles

Great Lesson Idea
The teacher used the poem -" Waffles gives me sniffles" to teach shared reading and writing. This lesson takes place over five days. Day One - Introduce the poem and discuss the poet and the title. The teacher pretends that the author asked the children to write a new stanza. Day Two - discuss Stanza's and what they are. The teacher and learners decide on what must be in the new stanza. The teacher and the children replace and add certain sections in the poem. Day Three - discuss the rhymimg words and put all the idea's together. Day four - discuss meaning of words and put together all the thoughts of the children. Day five - Act out the poem and illustrate it.

Language structure - punctuation

Great Lesson Idea
The teacher and the learners look at the cover and then they discuss the inside of the book. They look at the text and identify capital letters and full stops. The teacher uses group work to save time. While the learners are busy at the desks she brings out a group of learners and does a phonics lesson with them. She teachers long and short vowels by using hand movements. It is a very creative and interactive way of learning. They read a sentence without punctuation and then again with punctuation. The learners teach each other and find it easier to accept corrections from their peers.

The 5 "W" questions

Great Lesson Idea
The teacher and learners discuss the story by using the 5 "W" questions - Who, what, when, where and why. They go on to discuss the pictures and to predict what will happen next. The teacher does not show them the end of the story. They have to create a story orally about the story. She puts the difficult words on the board so that the children can cope with the text later. When she reads the story to them using a pointer. When the learners begin to read out loud on the mat they arranged very cleverly in rows on the mat by the teacher. The weaker learners sit in the middle so that they can listen to the stronger learners reading into their ears from the back and the front row learners.
